Video: tune-yards in Barcelona

Merrill Garbus, giving the bizness

Here’s a cool video from Pitchfork TV of Merrill Garbus, the tune-yards front lady, playing “Wolly Wolly Gong” in front of a crazy looking church in Barcelona. It’s an interesting juxtaposition of football revelers, celebrating Barca’s Champions League victory and Merrill playing her lullaby dwarfed by the church. As she describes it “ singing a lullaby at the end of the world.”

Check it out here.

Song Of The Day – “Cheek To Cheek” Lowell George

24 Jun

Lowell George thinking about his Rosarita...

I just love summer, and how certain songs that have been lying dormant in my brain all year decide to jump out and remind me of their presence. Last summer I discovered Little Feat, and soon after, Lowell George‘s solo album “Thanks I’ll Eat It Here” (sounds familiar…). It’s not east picking just one song off the album because it’s an eclectic group of tunes. There’s a definite bluesy/R&B feel throughout but there’ also some vaudeville, mariachi, and reggae.

“Cheek To Cheek”is the mariachi song, and also one of the sweetest songs on the album. It’s a love song written by George to a Mexican woman who is stranded south of the border. I also thought this song was fitting especially in the midst of our immigration reform.

Song Of The Day – “Tyson In His Prime” Mobolaji

23 Jun

Bay Area rapper/producer Mobolaji

Today’s song comes from Mobolaji, a Colorado based Bay Area born rapper/producer. The tune has an old school, East Coast flavor too it and makes a great companion for your summertime BBQ. “Tyson In His Prime” was recently made a favorite tweet by The Mike Tyson, showing that the young artist is turning ears. Sit back and feel the grooves. The track is off his debut mixtape High Learning and is available as a free download or stream.
